Good news and bad news regarding financing for companies in the tourism sector. The Italian banking system has regained confidence in the sector, and the availability of credit has increased, although the risk of bankruptcy remains high.
This is the conclusion of a study by the CRIF Business Observatory, which focused specifically on the tourism industry. Between April 2025 and March 2026, the volume of financing granted to companies in the sector grew by around 7% compared to the previous year.
The increase in banking confidence is mainly driven by the sector's strong performance and growth prospects. However, international uncertainty weighs on the situation, and the study reveals that companies in the sector continue to have a very high risk profile.
The issue of bankruptcies:
At the end of 2025, the default rate stood at 4.5% — virtually unchanged from the 4.6% recorded a year earlier, but still significantly above the national average of 3.3%.
In addition, according to the center for credit studies and statistical analysis, no improvement in the situation is expected.
"Despite the favorable trends observed in the first months of 2026, structural challenges persist in the sector, against a backdrop of high international uncertainty and rising geopolitical tensions," commented Luca D'Amico, CEO of CRIF Ratings. "Looking ahead, forecasts indicate a further increase in the default rates of the tourism sector by the end of the year, although the expected increase is more modest than that projected for Italian companies as a whole."
