Tourism Outlook - July 2026

In July 2026, tourist accommodation establishments recorded 3.4 million guests (+1.0%) and 9.6 million overnight stays (+2.1%). Among the main source markets, Canada (+6.6%), Germany (+5.3%), and the Netherlands (+3.9%) stood out with the highest year-over-year monthly growth rates in the number of Overnight Stays. By NUTS II region, the Alentejo (+7.5%) and the Norte (+6.3%) saw the largest increases in this indicator.

From January to July 2026, Portugal welcomed 18.5 million guests who generated 46.5 million overnight stays, primarily from the United Kingdom (share: 18.1%), Germany (11.4%), and the U.S. (9.8%).

Estimate of Tourism Receipts

According to data from the Banco de Portugal, the following trends are projected for the travel and tourism item in the balance of payments for the month of July 2026 and for the cumulative period from January through July 2026:

// In July 2026, the preliminary travel and tourism indicator points to a 1.5% increase in exports compared to July 2025, totaling €3,653.68 million (following a 2.7% change in June 2026) and a 6.3% increase in imports (€937.47 million), following a 6.0% change in July 2026.

// For the first seven months of 2026, tourism receipts (€16,524.22 million) exceeded the figure recorded in the homologous period of 2025 (€15,948.23 million), representing a 3.6% increase.

// Tourism expenditures reported for the cumulative period from January through July 2026 (€4,096.84 million) will be higher than the figure recorded in the homologous period the previous year (€3,883.05 million), representing a 5.5% increase.
