In August 2026, tourist accommodation establishments recorded 3.9 million guests (+1.9%) and 10.9 million overnight stays (+1.7%). Among the main source markets, Canada (+11.2%), the U.S. (+5.8%), and Spain (+5.0%) stood out with the highest year-over-year monthly growth in Overnight Stays. By NUTS II region, the Norte (+4.5%) and the Alentejo (+2.6%) saw the largest increases in this indicator.
From January through August 2026, Portugal received 22.4 million guests who generated 57.3 million Overnight Stays, primarily from the United Kingdom (share: 17.9%), Germany (11.0%), and Spain (9.7%).
August: Travel and Tourism in the Balance of Payments
According to data from the Banco de Portugal, the following trends are projected for the travel and tourism item in the balance of payments for August 2026 and for the cumulative period from January through August 2026:
// In August 2026, the preliminary travel and tourism indicator points to a 2.2% increase in exports compared to August 2025, totaling 4,447.05 million € (following a 1.5% change in June 2026) and a 4.3% increase in imports (921.82 million €), following a 6.3% change in August 2026.
// For the first eight months of 2026 combined, Tourism Receipts (€20,972.41 million) exceeded the figure recorded in the homologous period of 2025 (€20,299.55 million), representing a 3.3% increase.
// Tourism expenditures for the cumulative period from January through August 2026 (€5,018.71 million) will be higher than the figure recorded in the homologous period of the previous year (€4,766.87 million), representing an increase of 5.3%.
