The latest ANWB Vakantiemonitor reveals that only 52% of Dutch people plan to go on holiday in July and August 2026, down from 57% the previous year. Rising costs lead almost one in three Dutch people to give up summer holidays, while the trend to travel at other times of the year is growing. Geopolitical instability also influences choices: 52% prefer to travel in Europe, 65% avoid the Middle East and 42% postpone booking their holidays. Travelers are also making more conscious choices. 92% of trips are to Europe and 66% are made by car, while 31% opt for the plane. More than half avoid destinations with extreme heat or overtourism, and the use of artificial intelligence tools to plan vacations increased from 24% in 2025 to 39% in 2026, reflecting the increasing digitalization of the planning process
