Sharp price increases threaten the summer holidays of Italians

24 July 2026

"There was a slight decrease in the inflation rate in June; However, a new financial cut hangs over the summer plans of Italians, driven by rising energy and fuel prices and the entire tourism and travel sector." The statement is from Codacons (Italian consumer protection association), in a comment on the data released by Istat (nda: counterpart of the Portuguese INE).

There is also bad news in the transport sector: in June, diesel prices rose by 21.6% compared to the previous year, while gasoline rose by 10.2%.

Prices at bathing establishments soared by 12.9% year-on-year; all-inclusive travel packages rose by 3.4%, resorts by 3% in June and prices at restaurants and bars also rose by 3.2%.

Finally, in relation to air transport, the price trend is strongly influenced by the war in the Middle East. Domestic flight prices increased by a significant 38% in a single month, while European and intercontinental flights — due to lower demand for foreign travel — showed a price drop in both monthly and annual comparisons.
