Climate change and increasingly hot summers are changing the travel patterns and planning habits of Italian tourists. According to a survey commissioned by the multimodal booking platform Omio and conducted by Censuswide, the weather is now a key factor in strategic travel decisions, influencing both the choice of destination and the means of transportation.
"As weather plays an increasingly significant role in travel decisions, flexibility no longer just means choosing the right destination; it also means having the freedom to adjust one's own trip. At Omio, we see an increasing number of travelers who want to compare and combine train, bus and flights on a single platform. This allows them to easily modify plans, discover alternative routes and travel with more peace of mind, regardless of the weather forecast," noted Omio's travel experts.
Here are the main findings of the survey:
Weather-influenced planning: 79% of Italians take into account the predicted temperatures when choosing a summer destination (for 33%, it is a top priority, while 45% would consider alternative destinations in the face of extreme temperatures).
Desire to travel unchanged: The heat does not stop people from traveling; 53% of Italians say they have not changed their travel plans due to high temperatures in the last two years.
New rhythms and tactical adjustments: Upon arrival at their destination, 35% of travelers reduce movement during the hottest part of the day, 34% travel early in the morning or evening, and 23% schedule visits and excursions for cooler times. Air conditioning in accommodation has become a fundamental requirement for 33% of respondents (a rate that rises to 40% in the age group of 35 to 44 years).
Dealing with unforeseen events: In the event of weather emergencies during their stay, flexibility prevails: 29% change their activity schedule, while 23% wait for conditions to improve. Only an insignificant portion of 3% even cancels vacations.
Future trends (Coolcation): 57% plan to adapt their travel habits for future summers, opting for cooler destinations, trips in contact with nature and flexible itineraries.
