Malpensa Airport begins a new phase of development, with investments of approximately €600 million planned until 2029. Of this total, €50 million will be allocated to technology, while €100 million will be allocated to the expansion of Terminal 1 — the airport's main terminal — especially in the area that receives intercontinental flights. This represents a huge financial commitment to modernize and upgrade northern Italy's main airport. At the same time, €150 million will be dedicated to Linate, the other airport managed by SEA.
At the heart of the announced investments is the T1XL project, which adds 15,000 square meters of new facilities and the redevelopment of the existing 28,000 square meters. This initiative supports the expansion of the airport's international network, which has seen significant growth in long-haul travel and traffic from markets outside Europe. Specifically, the project aims to improve passenger flow management and increase efficiency in baggage management — including the installation of more carousels for flights outside the Schengen Area and the reduction of manual labor — while expanding the options for commerce and catering, a key economic component for Malpensa.
The works of the "Porta di Milano" project began in December 2025 and are expected to last about three years, with the first phase coming into operation in the summer of 2027.
