The desire to travel leads Italians not to give up their summer vacations, even if it means resorting to consumer credit or "BNPL" - Buy Now Pay Later.
According to a study by fintech FunniFin, around €170 million in travel and holiday loans were granted between January and May; however, more than half of consumers admit not knowing the real cost of the financing contracted.
The "Buy Now, Pay Later" market has seen an increase in uptake among Italian households, rising from 4% in 2022 to 30% in 2025 (representing a total volume of €9.9 billion).
However, FunniFin data reveals a lack of financial literacy: 57% of those who have used credit for non-essential expenses in the last 12 months know little or nothing about effective annual rates (APR), interest rates and fees, focusing only on the amount of the monthly installment rather than the total cost of the service.
