The summer of 2026 ends with record numbers for the capital's airport system: a total of more than 16 million passengers are expected between June and August, with approximately 15 million passing through Rome Fiumicino. Leonardo da Vinci Airport surpassed the 185,000 passenger mark in a single day for the first time on Sunday, August 16; in addition, on August 21, it surpassed the mark of 1,100 flights — adding arrivals and departures — operated in a 24-hour period.
This growth in passenger flow is mainly driven by the strengthening of international connectivity, with the launch of new intercontinental routes, such as Houston (operated by ITA Airways), Seattle (Alaska Airlines and Delta) and Sharjah (Air Arabia). Records were also recorded at the security checkpoints of Terminal 1, where 2,000 passengers were processed in just half an hour.
According to Aeroporti di Roma (Adr), these figures confirm Fiumicino's strategic role in the country's connectivity, tourism and logistics sectors. This role is expected to be further strengthened by ADR's sustainable development plan, which provides for €9 billion in self-financed investments to meet traffic demand — projected by ENAC to reach 100 million passengers by 2046.
