The number of foreign tourists visiting Italy and the number of overnight stays increased in the second quarter, although per capita spending registered a slight decrease. These are data from the Bank of Italy on international tourism and show that, in June alone, the balance of payments of Italian tourism registered a surplus of €3.8 billion — a small increase compared to the same month in 2025. Both spending by foreign travelers in Italy (€6.8 billion) and spending by Italian travelers abroad (€3.0 billion) rose compared to June 2025, showing increases of 4.8% and 2.6%, respectively.
In the second quarter of 2026, both flows increased compared to the same period of the previous year – a more significant increase in inflows (3.9%) than in outflows (1.1%); in both cases, the growth was mainly driven by business travel.
The increase in spending by Italians abroad was driven by higher per capita spending, although this factor was largely offset by the lower number of travelers and overnight stays. The growth in tourism revenue is due to travelers from both non-EU and EU countries (up 4.6% and 3.3%, respectively).
