Some 36.2 million Italians will leave for carefully selected destinations, planned one or two months in advance. Nothing is left to chance in the main travel season of the year, with the vast majority of travelers focusing their interest on Italy itself. In fact, 87.6% will choose to stay in the country, with beach destinations and the month of August leading the list of preferences.
For those travelling abroad (12.4%), beach destinations will again be at the top of the list, followed by major European capitals. In particular, travelers will give preference to coastal destinations in countries close to Italy — such as Croatia, Greece and Spain — demonstrating that even when planning a trip outside national borders, the choice still falls on destinations that are easily accessible.
This is the panorama of Italian tourism trends for the summer of 2026, according to a survey carried out by Tecnè for the Italian hotel association Federalberghi.
While August remains the "king" of summer — representing the main holiday period for 41.4% of travelers — July also promises a strong performance, with 28.8% of the preference; together with June (chosen by 24.4% of respondents), a month that registers significant growth.
More structured holidays:
"The impression is that Italians who travel in the summer of 2026 — the peak of the national tourist calendar — will make the most of their rest time," commented Bernabò Bocca, president of Federalberghi. "Holidays are being distributed in a more structured way over the four summer months; This allows for a more refined ability to streamline localities, taking advantage of all that this means in terms of companies and production chains. It is also interesting to note that a significant number of travelers will be making additional trips beyond their main vacation, confirming the emerging trend of splitting and spreading the vacation period over the entire summer season..."
