Understand Brazil's relationship with the purchase of 44.9% of TAP by the Lufthansa Group

20 October 2026

The purchase of 44.9% of TAP Air Portugal by the Lufthansa Group, for 1.2 billion euros, represents a strategic move to expand the German company's presence in European aviation. With the incorporation of the Portuguese airline, the group's share of Europe's air capacity should increase from 8.4% to 9.5%. Although the increase does not significantly change the balance of the European market, the operation strengthens the group's portfolio, which already includes companies such as Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and ITA Airways.

TAP's main strategic value lies in its strong connection with Latin America, especially Brazil. The Portuguese company accounts for 24% of the flight capacity between Europe and Brazil, second only to Latam. With the acquisition, the Lufthansa Group will be able to achieve a 36% share of air capacity between the two markets, increasing its competitiveness on transatlantic routes and reinforcing its presence in the western tip of Europe.

Another important impact is on the operation of Lisbon Airport, where TAP currently concentrates 49% of scheduled flights. With the company's entry into the German group, this share could reach 52.5%, increasing Lufthansa's relevance in the main Portuguese air hub. The airport already operates close to the limit of its capacity, while the construction of a new structure is not expected before 2034. In this scenario, the acquisition offers the group a strategic position to expand international connections and strengthen its operations in the European and Latin American markets.
