New data from Denmark's National Statistical Office shows that Danes made 7.6 million trips abroad with at least four nights of stay in 2025. Spain maintains the lead, with 15% of trips, followed by Italy (10%), Germany and Greece (8%), France and Sweden (6%) and Norway (5%). Portugal shares the 10th place with Turkey, Austria and the United States, representing 3% of trips, equivalent to about 228 thousand trips by Danes.
It is particularly relevant that Portugal appears, for the first time, among the ten most sought after foreign destinations by Danish tourists in the analysis of the Danish National Statistical Office. This result contrasts, however, with the official Portuguese statistics, which point to a slight reduction in the number of overnight stays by Danish tourists in 2025 compared to 2024. A possible explanation may be a gradual change in the relationship between stays in traditional hotels and private accommodation, such as Airbnb, which is not directly accounted for in Portuguese tourist accommodation statistics.
Both the Danish Confederation of Industry and Commerce (Dansk Erhverv) and the Confederation of Danish Industry (Dansk Industri) consider that Danes' willingness to travel remains strong, despite geopolitical uncertainty and rising travel costs. Southern European destinations continue to dominate the preferences of Danish tourists, and the strengthening of SAS's route network is expected to further facilitate international travel in the coming years.
