Long-haul travel share has never been lower since the pandemic years

28 May 2026

According to a study by ANVR, the Dutch are increasingly favouring nearby European destinations, especially accessible by car, to the detriment of long-distance travel. The share of travel outside Europe fell to 11%, the lowest figure since the pandemic, reflecting the current geopolitical and economic uncertainty.

Destinations such as Germany, France, Austria, Croatia and Spain are growing, and in the case of Spain, demand is increasing on the mainland while the islands are losing popularity. Outside Europe, the US reaches a historic low of interest, while Cape Verde stands out positively, with demand doubling compared to 2025.
