Chinese tourists are expected to make fewer international trips in the second half of the year than previously anticipated due to the gloomy economic outlook affecting consumer sentiment.
Travel marketing and data firm China Trading Desk has lowered its forecast for 2026 to about 179 million trips and about $258 billion (Singapore $330 billion) in destination spending. While still representing record volume that surpasses pre-pandemic levels, the figures mark a drop of nearly 3% from previous estimates in June.
Chinese consumers have not stopped wanting to travel, but they are becoming more selective about when a trip is worth it.
