The initiative brings together Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), TAP Air Portugal, and LUGGit to create a seamless process that eliminates baggage logistics from the traveler’s journey. At the Lisbon Cruise Terminal, the process begins with passenger identity verification and the application of identification tags organized by departure groups. All bags are weighed and checked according to airline limits, ensuring that the process complies with airport security procedures even before the luggage leaves the port.
After validation, the bags are grouped by flight departures and loaded onto transport vehicles coordinated according to departure schedules. The transport vans only begin the journey to Humberto Delgado Airport after a final check confirms that all passengers in each group have been processed. Once at the airport, the baggage is delivered under direct coordination and entered into TAP’s check-in system, completing a secure chain of custody that extends from the terminal to the aircraft hold, allowing passengers to proceed directly to security screening.
The effectiveness of this operational model was demonstrated by data from the pilot project: 221 pieces of luggage belonging to 188 passengers were processed across 32 different flights, with zero incidents of loss or damage. In addition to technical reliability, the partnership allowed tourists to reclaim a full day of their vacation, eliminating the stress of carrying heavy luggage through the city center or facing long lines at check-in counters. User feedback highlighted the freedom provided by the luggage-free service, reinforcing the convenience of this solution for the post-cruise experience in Lisbon.
