The pandemic that plagued the world, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the consequent lockdown periods and the rules then determined by the various governments, gave rise to great difficulties for all tourism activities in 2020.

Accommodation Capacity and Average Lenght of Stay

In the number of Local Accommodation units there was a decrease of 30.5 % and in the number of beds of 31.1 %. The regions of A.M. Lisboa, Norte and Centro concentrated 67 % of the beds available. The registered increase in the Average Length Stay in April (3.42 nights), was motivated by the choice of this type of establishment, to spend a few days in the Easter period.

Notice: The average stay is calculated based on the ratio between the number of overnight stays and guests and may not coincide with the months of greatest demand.

Overnight Stays and Guests

The low season concentrated 41.9% of the total overnight stays, that is, 1.50 million, while the high season, with 1.48 million, represented 41.5% of the total. The predominant guests in LA are residents who, in terms of overnight stays generated, reached a share of 51.2%, equivalent to 1.83 million overnight stays. A.M. Lisboa (1,181.3 thousand overnight stays), Norte (682.8 thousand) and the Centro region (590.5 thousand) concentrated 68.7% of the country’s movement. The 10 main foreign markets generated 1,348.1 thousand overnight stays, equivalent to 77.0% of the total overnight stays from non-residents, which, in 2020, were 1,744.5 thousand.

Notice: High season: July to September; mid season: April to June and October; low season: January to March and November and December.

Revenue

In relation to total revenue, the months related to the high season concentrated 47.1% of the annual value, or €57.6 million (-62.7% compared to the same period in 2019) and the low season 37.6% which amounted to €46.0 million (-48.0%). A.M. Lisboa (€36.2 million), the Norte (€23.9 million) and the Algarve (€22.4 million) accounted for 67.5% of the revenue recorded in the country.

Regarding the values ​​of average revenue generated per overnight stay (Graph 7), the amounts for 2019 are always higher than those for 2020.
