accommodation

March 2020 marked the beginning of the global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic after the emergence in China. After just over two years, apparently we can face the resurgence of the demand for travel. The Data Tracker tool used by Transparent allows you to monitor and track the search in local accommodation. Looking at the level of existing reserves for the summer of 2022, there is a level of demand never achieved before, surpassing the best results ever achieved, even before the pandemic.

From the 10th week of this year, there is an increase in demand for next summer in all world regions.

Asia, which typically has shorter reserve windows, still has the lowest booking rate, but has recorded the highest increase when compared to the same period in 2019. Europe, on the other hand, may have had lower growth compared to 2019, but the level of reserves was higher (32 %) in week 10, with some advantage over the other regions.

So far, the level of reservations for local accommodation in Europe in view of the summer of 2022 has reached unprecedented levels. The outlook for the summer of 2022 for the different European markets is analysed in detail below. The improvement in demand levels compared to pre-pandemic is striking and widespread. The combination of repressed demand and a first summer again in freedom are having as one of the consequences a huge growth in demand for local accommodation across Europe.

Portugal led the level of reservations in local accommodation at week 10, with a reservation level of 38 %, 12 % more than at the same time for the summer of 2019, when the country ranked 2nd, and which was only surpassed by Denmark, which maintains the level of reservations for this year. After Portugal, the countries with the highest levels of reserves are Ireland and Spain. However, with the exception of Denmark, all other European markets show clear gains compared to 2019.

When focusing on the analysis at the level of the cities, here too the leadership is Portuguese, with Lisbon being the highlight. In fact, Lisbon already had a reserve rate of more than 45%, with 17.7% in the same period in 2019, representing a relative increase of 156%. For comparison Paris shows a reservation level of 33% and Majorca 29%.
